New Playgrounds with Unique Designs Dan Rodgerson Cedar City, Utah

Complete with a 90-foot zip line, Cedar City finished two playground projects that families with children will enjoy for years to come.

Funded with $35,000 of RAP tax money, the playgrounds have given the two sites a new look.

“All of our parks in the city are very unique and all have unique designs. They’re just fun and inviting. They make you want to get outside, be active and play on them,” said Mayor Maile Wilson.

The playground at Canyon Ball Fields is tucked between a few ball fields to avoid children being hit by home run and foul balls.

The park has some unique features not seen in traditional playground settings, including two zip lines – one that runs 90 feet for the older children and a smaller version with a swing to sit in for the toddlers.

“There is nothing like the zip line in any parks in Southern Utah. The park is a new and innovative twist for the kids,” said Dan Rodgerson, Cedar City leisure services director.

The playground was a result of hundreds of requests to the city from parents looking for a place in that area, said Mayor Maile Wilson.

Residents voted on the best park designs; designs for the park were posted online.

More than 120 people weighed in on the decision.

At East Canyon Park, the old equipment, dating back 25 years, was removed and replaced with the new playground design.

Located at the mouth of Cedar Canyon, the park is visited by hundreds of people every week, and the picnic shelter area is rented out almost every weekend during the summer.

After the remodel, East Canyon Park was reopened last month by a community workgroup.

This group consisted of many of the citizens, including the mayor and Councilman Fred Rowley, who all helped in spreading the woodchips on the play area.

“So far the kids love it,” said Bruce Barclay, chairman for the Parks and Recreation Committee.
